AI and Health: Building a Smarter, More Inclusive Future
Overview
LGBTQI+ individuals continue to face health disparities at significantly higher rates than the general population. Despite advancements in social and legal equality in countries like Germany, the LGBTQI+ community remains vulnerable to specific health risks. These risks, such as higher rates of chronic disease and mental health comorbidities, are compounded by barriers to accessing culturally competent care, stigma, and discrimination.
At Loretta Health, our mission is to create a digital health platform that addresses these disparities through a personalized and inclusive approach to chronic disease prevention and health management.
The Current Health Landscape for LGBTQ+ Individuals in Germany
In Germany, while there have been great efforts made toward equality, health inequities for the LGBTQI+ population remain entrenched. The following statistics highlight areas that need urgent attention:
Mental Health Challenges: LGBTQI+ individuals are 1.5 to 3 times more likely to experience mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, compared to their heterosexual peers. Among transgender individuals, the suicide attempt rate is alarmingly high, with 41% reporting a lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts.
Chronic Diseases: LGBTQI+ adults experience significantly higher rates of chronic diseases due to factors like stress, discrimination, and reduced healthcare access. For example, the smoking rate among LGBTQ+ adults in Germany is nearly double that of the general population, contributing to increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
HIV and STIs: Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to face a disproportionate burden of dealing HIV infections in Germany. Access to preventive measures, such as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), and PeP, remains limited for many, leaving vulnerable individuals at higher risk of infection.
Healthcare Discrimination: According to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), 20% of LGBTQ+ individuals in Germany avoid seeking healthcare due to fear of discrimination or previous negative experiences with healthcare providers.
Barriers to Healthcare Access
The challenges that LGBTQI+ individuals face in the healthcare system are multifaceted and require both social and structural change. The two primary barriers to equitable healthcare access include:
Stigma and Discrimination: LGBTQI+ individuals, particularly transgender patients, report frequent incidents of discrimination in healthcare settings. For example trans individuals often get refused HRT because they are not taken seriously or still let their religious belief get in the way of a unbiased judgement. This form of discrimination not only denies essential healthcare but also exacerbates mental and emotional distress from patients.
Lack of Culturally Competent Care: Many healthcare providers lack sufficient training on the unique health needs of LGBTQI+ patients. This often leads to medical mismanagement, as seen in cases where hormone therapy is misunderstood or drug interactions are misdiagnosed. In one instance reported in the Journal of Ethics, a doctor incorrectly attributed symptoms to a patient's hormone therapy, recommending its discontinuation. The result was unnecessary emotional distress and potential physical complications.
